Day 16

In John 16, Jesus continued his teaching to the disciples found at the end of chapter 15—that following Jesus comes with a cost, and a helper, the Holy Spirit, would be sent to them. He again referenced his coming crucifixion and resurrection and then said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Our world is marked with suffering and brokenness. Since you’ve been home from camp, you’ve likely already seen some of this. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus has overcome, and true peace is found in his victory, not in our own ability. His power over death is a promise that one day all things will be made whole, and we can rest in his will and power to do it.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when the hardship, suffering, and brokenness of this world come, remind me of Jesus's words that he has overcome the world. Allow your peace to wash over me and be illuminated in me. In Jesus’s name, amen.
