Day 9

Listen:

What are you afraid of? In John 14, Jesus was telling the disciples that he was going to leave them and go to heaven. They were worried and afraid. Jesus had always been with them, and not only was he leaving them, but he was also leaving them with what seemed like an impossible mission. They had already faced so much opposition and even threats to their lives. They were overwhelmed and they had questions. But Jesus promised he wouldn’t leave them alone.

Today’s Passage: John 14:25-27

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Look It Up: Read all of John 14. It’s a powerful chapter. Highlight the promises and directives that Jesus gives us throughout this chapter.

Reflect: Just like Jesus promised the disciples that his spirit would be with them, he makes the same promise to us. We don’t have to be overwhelmed, stressed, and afraid. The Holy Spirit lives in us and wants to help and comfort us. He wants to bring us true peace no matter what we are facing in this world.

So if you’re feeling fearful, sit quietly today for a while and ask the Holy Spirit to bring you a sense of peace.

Write It Down: Grab your journal and answer these questions.

  • What are you afraid of?

  • What do you know about the Holy Spirit?

  • What would it look like for you to find peace that is beyond what the world has to offer you?

Pray: Ask God to help you feel and know the Holy Spirit living in you. Ask that you would feel a sense of peace that is beyond what the world can understand. Trust him with your fears.
