Day 21

In his final chapter, John records arguably the most important lesson every follower of Jesus needs to know. He describes an encounter the disciples had with the resurrected Jesus. They had been fishing all night but had caught nothing. In the morning, they heard the voice of a stranger who told them to throw their nets to the other side of the boat. Immediately their nets were full of fish, and they recognized Jesus calling from afar. Now this is where it gets really good. As soon as their nets were filled, they started heading to shore. Peter couldn’t even wait for the boat to get there, and he jumped in and swam. When they got to Jesus, they found him already cooking fish and making breakfast for them. Jesus didn’t need what they were bringing; he simply wanted to spend time with them. Jesus doesn’t need what we bring to the table, either—all we have comes from him anyway! He just wants us. He just wants you. So today, start your day with him. Spend some time with him. He doesn’t need anything from you; he just wants you.

Jesus, help me see that you just want me, and the best thing I can do is spend time with you.
